Snorkeling with turtles has been a very popular activity In Tenerife since rather many years. The reason is that the population of marine turtles is so big in the Canary islands that you can meet them very frequently in their natural habitat. In general, in the world there are 7 species of marine turtles and 6 of them live in Tenerife: leatherback sea turtle, hawksbill sea turtle, green sea turtle, loggerhead sea turtle, Kemp’s ridley sea turtle and olive ridley sea turtle. All of them are friendly and do not get scared or stressed when seeing people in the water, whether they are divers or snorkelers. That´s why you can observe them easily and actually swim together with them for a while. The strict rule for everybody is not to touch turtles and, of course, not to ride one. Each of us has to understand that we cannot disturb them in any way. Tenerife´s water is their home and we are the visitors who are offered a spectacular show: to watch how the life of marine turtles is. Every now and then they go up to the surface to take a breath and these are fantastic moments for the snorkelers. So close encounter with the marine turtles! Then they hunt, make friends between each other or swim alone. It´s the whole world down there!

Earlier there used to be several spots in Tenerife to do snorkeling with turtles. In these place families of turtles permanently stayed for living. All of them were abandoned except for one, PalmMar cliffs. It´s an attractive place both above and below the surface. Cliffs and rock formations that are underwater created a cozy home for lovely marine turtles. If you are looking for a good snorkeling tour in Tenerife, no doubt, PlamMar is the best site for that. The most common way to reach the cliffs is on kayaks, as there is no access with the car or walking there. So, to do snorkeling with turtles, you go with kayaks about 30 minutes starting from Los Cristianos, that is the closest access to the water. On your way you can get lucky and also meet dolphins, so many of them are living here too.

It wouldn´t be an exaggeration to call snorkeling with turtles a therapy. You feel so delighted and full of positive emotions being that close to these gorgeous animals that you can´t help forgetting about all your worries and problems left on the land. We are blessed to have so rich underwater life in Tenerife! Read more on kayaking Tenerife blog.
